Lapland University of Applied Sciences and the University of Lapland are jointly implementing the Lapland Robotics project. The project aims to introduce robotics, artificial intelligence and digital twins to Lapland’s environment and to significantly increase the region’s capacity for innovation in the development of low-carbon and energy efficient processes, products and services. The project’s total budget is EUR 583,000, of which the Regional Council of Lapland has provided EUR 466,401 in European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and state funding.

The project brings together different actors to explore SME-tailored solutions in the areas of robotics, artificial intelligence and digital twins, identifying their operating models and scalability potential. The project will provide Lapland’s SMEs with data on developing new business, encompassing sustainability, material and energy efficiency, through robotics, artificial intelligence and digital twins. Additionally, the project will increase the competitiveness of Lapland’s universities in national and international research and development activities, which will in turn support the internationalization of SMEs in the long-term.

The Lapland Robotics project explores the applicability of robotics, artificial intelligence and digital twins by engaging with technology companies as potential users of the solutions. The project examines the current state of technology and service models, and creates a plan for the utilization of the technologies across different application domains. The project will test a number of solutions in field conditions as well as in laboratory, small-scale proof-of-concept and 5G environments.

The output of the project will provide information on unmanned robot prototypes, tested in the field conditions with companies and users. Additionally, the project will produce digital twins, i.e. precise virtual environments where the robot functionalities can be simulated and tested before deployment in field conditions.

Duration of the project: 01.03.2020-30.06.2023
